Responding to the Outcome of the Elections

Pastor Robert Hammond

Recently, I read, "The way you respond to disappointment with authorities in the society, at the job, at church teaches your children how to be under authority. The attitudes that you display teach either Biblical submission (i.e. to God-ordained authority) or unbiblical independence and rebellion."

We would do well to remember that we are called to obey civil leaders unless they compel us to disobey God: In Acts 5:29, the Bible says, " ...We ought to obey God rather than men." To obey God is to obey the authorities that He ordains.

In Romans 13, the Lord commands, "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation."

Lord, help us to have a right heart toward authority. Help us to respect the authorities that you ordain. Give us a heart to be obedient to pray for our leaders (1 Tim. 2:1-2). Lord, give us a heart to glorify you through our obedience to the authorities that you ordain for your purposes.
